TIPS

FOR MANAGING YOUR ONLINE REPUTATION

1. SET YOURSELF A GOAL
Define a strategy, specify the outlines of the image that you want to communicate, your values, etc…… This step is paramount to ensure that your e-reputation campaign isn’t wandering all over the place. Stay on track. You may have make some adjustments or clarifications along the way, depending on your field (politician, business executive, public figure, product or service brand), but reminding yourself of your fundamental values will help you in many situations. This image and these values are your sole justification; in a crisis don’t get bogged down in complicated explanations, stay on track and remain calm.
2. OCCUPY THE SPACE
Obviously, once this track is established, explain it, publicize it. The Internet is a medium like any other, and websites, forums, and blogs are nothing more than publishing vehicles. So occupy the space, show yourself! And depending on your sector or industry, use social networks (for professionals LinkedIn, Viadeo; for private individuals or personalities, Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Instagram, etc.). In recent years these have become essential shapers of Internet reputation.
3. HIDE YOURSELF
If you do things that are totally unrelated to your image or could even discredit your stated values (you do online gaming, or sports that don’t show you in the best light…), do so under a pseudonym. Don’t use your real name when signing up to or talking about these activities on the Internet. Be discreet to stay alive. And don’t worry: everyone does it.
4. KEEP A CLOSE WATCH
Vigilance or monitoring is the very essence of e-reputation. Unfortunately, though, some people become hooked, obsessively checking their accounts to see what others are saying about them or their postings. Vigilance should not make you dependent, becoming despondent or ecstatic about every tiny aspect of your reputation moment to moment. Be smart in your vigilance: a fast scan to spot dangers. By browsing on search engines, you should be able to identify any potentially damaging content being posted. This part is very time-consuming. But we have tools for that, so contact us !
5. WATCH YOUR BACK
Your business and property are fully insured? But not your most valuable asset: your image? Be professional, don’t take reckless risks – just like you’re careful to protect your physical capital, protect your e-reputation too. You can engage a specialist company or a community manager to manage crises or to work proactively (preventively) on your e-reputation.
