TRIPADVISOR: THE “VERY BAD TRIP” OF FRENCH RESTAURATEURS. 1 BAD REVIEW ON TRIPADVISOR = 10,000 EUROS LOST SALES!
General de Gaulle would be turning in his grave if he knew Americans were landing again in France to make it rain or shine on the restaurants of the beaches of Normandy and elsewhere… Americans already control all our communications, Internet searches, etc. And for some years now they also control the fortunes, popularity, financial health and online reputation of our cherished French restaurant industry through uncontrolled and often bogus consumer reviews! (What’s more, some individuals criticize 2 or 3 establishments the same evening, when they’re not sleeping in multiple hotels that same night!)

France, the symbol of refined cuisine the world over, proud of its Michelin, its Bocuse, its cooking schools that ensure tradition and the transmission of our savoir-faire and approach to life, is now classified and judged by the inventors of Coca-Cola and McDonalds. The real problem lies not with them but with us, our inertia, lack of combativeness, and perhaps even courage… We won’t throw stones at people who sense there is money to be made… Uberize the hospitality trade and tourism, why not… In any case, it’s too late to turn the clock backwards… But progress must be controlled and regulated.

The “TripAdvisor” system, ok, but we have to force them to listen to us, force them to change their review policy to acknowledge the realities of the Web. The realities of the Web? To collate and rate Customer reviews to provide information about the quality of establishments: YES! But to be a lethal tool for anyone with a gripe, or competitors who want to bring down an establishment through Bogus Reviews: NO! TripAdvisor is certainly the leader, but should we let it do whatever it wants to do in France? I hope not. France has laws, and to force a profession to succumb to the dictates of a tourist directory that doesn’t check the veracity of the reviews posted, is out of the question!

Every unverified review (no scan sent of the bill for example…) should be deleted immediately at the proprietor’s request. But we’re not there yet… Thousands of French restaurateurs are being undermined by bogus reviews on these scam sites, foodservice is one of the few sectors that are hiring and yet again our “soft” government is doing nothing…
